BS 99001: the quality standard written for construction
BS 99001 is the British Standard for quality management in the built environment sector. It builds on ISO 9001 and adds the sector-specific requirements that generic quality systems miss: design quality, competence, temporary works, inspection and testing, and the record-keeping demanded by the Building Safety Act era.
What is BS 99001?
BS 99001:2022 was developed by BSI with the construction industry in response to a hard truth: ISO 9001 alone, applied generically, has not prevented the quality failures that the sector is known for. Every requirement of ISO 9001:2015 still applies; BS 99001 then layers on requirements written specifically for project-based, multi-organisation construction work.
It is designed for any organisation working in the built environment: main contractors, specialist subcontractors, designers, consultants and clients, across buildings and infrastructure alike.
The timing matters too. With the Building Safety Act raising the bar on competence, accountability and the "golden thread" of building information, BS 99001 gives organisations a recognised, certifiable way to demonstrate they take construction quality seriously.
